April 15. . . Painted Bunting Day!!

Hello PBOT volunteers!  Dr. Jamie here.  Tax day is upon us, but that just means that Painted Buntings have officially arrived here in Wilmington!!  Spring migration is in full swing, with migratory birds of all kinds passing through and breeding birds settling in for the spring and summer.  I had my first Gray Catbird at my suet feeder just yesterday! A Late Breeding Season Update!

Hello PBOT Friends! The breeding season is nearly complete, and you may already see or should soon see juvenile green Painted Buntings using your feeders and yards. We've had quite a bit of rain this season here in Southeast North Carolina, cooling it down instead of those brutal high temperatures we've had in the past couple of years. Therefore, conditions for breeding buntings were good, and hopefully you've seen the same where you live. Read more »

Bald Head Island field season is on!

Hi everyone - we had a great week out on Bald Head Island last week!  We caught 43 birds at four sites, including 15 new birds!  And it was great to see many birds with old band combos - some of them four years old or older - back on the breeding grounds.  We were fortunate to have a great group of interns from the Bald Head Island Conservancy joining us out in the field.  They were thrilled to see their first Painted Buntings up close!  My lovely and talented wife Liz was o Read more »
